Extremely diverse content diets contribute to a fragmented reality. Perhaps a community once used to get all their news from the local newspaper. Then, the television transformed us into a global village of fragmented reality. [[Neil Postman]]'s describes this phenomenon with his framing of [[Now...this]] in [[Amusing Ourselves to Death]].
But perhaps, even if television news broadcasts feed us fragmented bits and pieces of news, still, America once used to sit down and watch television as a nation. Despite the different channels, everyone was watching a selection from the same pool of sources. We all once sat to watch the moon landing. MTV created a shared pop cultural language.
As I write this in 2026, Internet and social media users have their choice of platform and a near-infinite source of content creators to engage with. There are more people than ever to listen to. What one person who lives in the apartment or house right next to mine engages with and forms their reality may not be the same for me. The information landscape is fragmented and incoherent.
Further, whatever someone engages with they see more of. If someone mostly watches Instagram reels of food in Japan, they tend to see more of that, or more reels of food, or more reels of Japan. If someone subscribes to videos of Youtubers explaining why we're all doomed due to politics in the Middle East, they tend to get recommended more that is similar. If they do not seek out competing views, algorithms may never introduce them to new information.
Despite the overall fragmented reality of information, our platforms have a greater ability than ever before to keep the user/reader/watcher in a deceptively coherent worldview.
