Our collective attention eroded with the transition from print to other forms of media. They created new forms of knowledge, new concepts that were thinkable, but a capacity to engage with long-form text was lost. What are some new concepts made thinkable by our new media? One example is the ability to transcend physical boundaries to find community. To make friends on the Internet, even fall in love, with people who live across the planet. Another is virality. Memes, images, videos, music, can easily be mixed and remixed and proliferate to a massive networked public. It can go wide. It can go fast. But it can be increasingly hard for an idea to go deep.
