tags: #learning-spanish This is an index to track all my Spanish learnings. ### Why learn Spanish? I started my first job in September 2020 during the pandemic. As I settled in to remote work, a fleeting dream was born in my mind--I casually wondered, what could it be like to work remotely from Latin America for a few months. I had no particular reason at the time to choose Latin America, it just happened to be an ideal time zone for my working hours, less expensive than traveling the US or Canada, and was fast becoming of interest to remote workers/digital nomads. At that time I threw "learn Spanish" onto my "Someday" todo list. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it grew on me. Some time later I watched La casa de las flores with English subs, and absolutely loved it. Around that time I also had an upcoming trip to Spain. Also studied Spanish for like 5-6 years throughout middle and high school, so wouldn't be starting from zero. Also I live in New York and it'd actually be practical. Also, watching Coco sparked in me this odd curiosity about Día de los Muertos, and more broadly, Mexico, that I feel obligated to pursue. Also I understand Tagalog and there's a not unsignificant amount of similar language. I don't want to get all into my feelings about my Filipino roots and our Spanish colonial past, but there is...an affinity there that I don't have the words to explain yet. It's kinda fucked up, probably. I should probably learn how to speak Tagalog instead. But that's a topic for a different time. All in all, several reasons and feelings aligned and compelled me to pursue learning Spanish. I look back on that original desire of remote working and think of my original reasons as escapist self-indulgence, but I'm glad they've led me in this direction.
