Quick write-up on how I handle time tracking and other interesting data for my Spanish learning.
One thing I've learned from other language learners in the community is that the process of language learning, and by extension, time tracking that learning, is a very individual process. I'd recommend to other novice learners to evaluate what their goals are from learning a language and craft their approach to learning accordingly. Do you want to travel South America? Do you want to watch and understand telenovelas? Do you want to chat with friends online? Do you want to publish blog posts? These goals should influence what content you immerse with and how much time you spend reading/writing/listening/speaking.
So here are my goals for time tracking.
I'm interested in seeing and understanding the following:
- How much time I spent engaging with the language - specifically immersion content
- A breakdown of the types of content I am engaging with
- Am I consistent over time?
I'm not interested in seeing the following:
- Granular anki statistics
- Number of words or sentences mined
- How much time I spend engaging with vocabularly or grammar
- Getting into the details of how much time spent watching a show is actually spent listening to someone **speak Spanish**, so **I do not** want to calculate how much I spent with dialogue vs. opening credits, etc. I am mostly interested in my **total time** immering.
Other goals
- Not allowing time tracking to get in the way of learning Spanish
In the future - write more on my Airtable time tracking setup. Had some fun working with airtable automation.
