The Egyptians used cylinder seals and proprietary marks on their pottery. These forms of identification were influenced by the Sumerians and [[Mesopotamian cylinder seals]]. Carved scarab emblems had flat surface engraved with hieroglyphic inscriptions and were commonly used as seals. Occasionally, the scarab was also set as a signet ring.
