What I like about Coco - Coco vs Moana. A false dichotomy that is relevant to me. I watched both of these in a relatively short span of time. I wanted to enjoy Moana more than I did. The Pacific Islander roots felt closer to my Filipino roots. But as a story it didn't speak to me the way Coco did. I absolutely loved Coco. Aesthetically I appreciated purple and fuschia and orange hues more than the bluegreens. The art and animal for the Land of the Dead is ethereal, dreamlike. If I'm assessing a connection to Filipino values (or at least my experience of Filipino culture and values), Coco is more closely related than Moana ends up being. The tightly (toxically) knit multi-generational family with the powerful matriarchal influence. The tension between wanting to chase your dreams and be a part of your family. - Hector and Imelda's re-romance. The shyness and uncertainty with which they reunite. The sweet agony of an intense, passionate, once-in-a-lifetime romance that just...can't or doesn't work or goes terribly wrong for one reason or another. The sweet agony of pining. - Imelda's reawakening to her love of music when she performs Mi Llorona for the crowd. Her spirit is set on fire. [[on singing your heart out]] - The concept of the two deaths. Physical death, when your body passes from the material world, and the Final Death, when you are forgotten to those who are living. - The muuuuuuusic. Remember Me and Mi Llorona played in my head on repeat for weeks after seeing this film.
